What is DIP, SMD, COB, MCOB of LED
LED or Light Emitting Diode is an electronic component
like resistors, capacitors, etc. It is made of semiconductor material.
The unique feature of this component is that it emits light when a
suitable voltage is applied across it. It can be used as a single unit
or as a combination of multiple units. Based on the construction LEDs
are classified as DIP, SMD, COB and MCOB.
DIP or Dual In-line Package is a LED that is enclosed in a plastic bullet shaped capsule with two long metal pins protruding out of it. The plastic acts as a lens and the pins aid in soldering. For example a 5mm LED working on 5V and drawing current of 50mA will emit light of 3-4 lumen.
SMD or Surface Mounted Diode is a chip which consists of single or multiple LEDs mounted on a surface of particular size. This combination improves the performance of the LEDs. The SMD emits light of 4-5 lumen per diode.
The SMD3528 is a single diode chip with 2 pins and having size of 3.5mm x 2.8mm. It consumes power between 0.05 watts to 0.08 watts.
The SMD5050 is a chip with 3 diodes with 6 pins and having a size of 5mm x 5mm. It consumes power of 0.15 watts to 0.24 watts. By controlling RGB color the diodes can be used to produce multiple colors.
Smaller size and better performing SMDs are being continually developed with varying specifications.
Popularly used for strip lights the SMDs emit light of 50-100 lumen per watt. Combination of LEDs over a small area also produces certain amount of heat although very less as compared to other lighting devices. To maintain long life of LEDs this heat has to be dissipated. Therefore all types of surfaces used for mounting LEDs are attached to a heat sink. Visual examples of some SMDs are given at the bottom of page
COB or Chip On Board is a combination of multiple diodes (usually 9 or more) with only 2 pins. No color control possible. Commonly used for flash lights. Generally COBs emit light of 80-100 lumen per watt.
MCOB or Multiple Chips On Board is a combination of multiple COBs connected in series. The light emitted depends on the number of COBs used.
